Nice! Thats a really cute concept! 
Would it be possible for users to lay down markers on the map. Perhaps one per day?!. And the Cactus would (still with a degree of randomness) move towards the marker location and take a selfie.
Or it could also be a tweeted address location at the cactus account.
Tagging the user on Twitter when/if the selfie happens.
Now you would suddenly have a some sort of social meta game. With a viral potential.
And make it international as well.
