Hack the Copenhagen parking vending machines!

At the end of 2015 the City of Copenhagen will introduce a new parking system. As a result, 800 of the city’s 1600 parking vending machines will no longer be needed. Instead of scrapping them, the City of Copenhagen is currently considering how to re-purpose the machines for alternative use.

City of Copenhagen invites everybody to re-imagine the machines: This needs designers, makers, developers, tinkers, welders, painters etc.

THE HACK
Will run for 6 weeks with a kickoff Thursday March 12th and a presentation April 24th. The hack will be a combination of a traditional hack-a-thon and start-up-weekend: Because there is only a limited number of machines available, you'll have to pitch your way to a machine and form groups at the kickoff. Existing collectives, labs, hack-spaces etc. are welcome to participate as groups but should be open for new playmates.

THE CHALLENGE
Hacks could include use of the existing display, payment systems and ticket printer, or the machines could be retro-fitted with other functionalities such as touch screens, cameras, levers & buttons and sensors. It’s completely up to you.

Before the kickoff we will send out a detailed programme and information on some of the challenges we are struggling with.

HOW DO I GET A MACHINE?
At the kickoff participants will pitch and vote on ideas and form teams.

The teams need to have access to a workspace where the machine can be shipped to and be tinkered with in the hack period.

SLUSH FUND
The City of Copenhagen has set up a (limited) slush fund to cover expenses for materials, microchips, and so on, and will cover the cost of transportation of the machines to workspaces in and around the city.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER THE HACK?
Some re-purposed machines will be tested in Copenhagen’s Smart City test area between Rådhuspladsen, Vester Voldgade, H. C. Andersens Boulevard and the harbour during the summer of 2015.

The best/most interesting of the hacked machines will hopefully go on display in the test area as well.
