News! Tech! Tools! Talks! Games! And Stuff Worth Sharing!
Re: News! Tech! Tools! Talks! Games! And Stuff Worth Sharing!
Even though there have been some recent setbacks at Half Past Yellow they keep soldering on with a new project.
Clearly looking like some kind of Tower Defense like game with a controllable main character.

A bit of doom and gloom for a sunny day!
RIP Piranha Bytes who got Embracerede earlier this year. I have good memories of the early Gothic titles back in the days.
The Rise and Fall of Piranha Bytes | The Developer of Gothic, Risen & Elex RPGs
The publishing branch of Humble Games is closing down
And finally but not least! the previously mentioned Kickstarter on Glyde the Dragon (Don't google the word 'glyde' you will get something completely different). Has been cancelled even though the project met it's funding goal. I was quite optimistic about the KS but was unable to account for internal difficulties.
So sadly it turns out that the volunteer project team has been completely disbanded due to them not being able to agree on the future of the project. So now the amount of DK developers connected to the project is down from 1 to 0.
Update: (Oh actually that 1 is back!)
Making games is not easy in so many ways! But the project continues regardless.

Re: News! Tech! Tools! Talks! Games! And Stuff Worth Sharing!
Oddballers from DK Gameswing just released on Steam. Previously it was out on Ubisoft Connect, EGS, consoles and Luna.
Things worth knowing:
-Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Denuvo Anti-tamper
-Requires 3rd-Party Account: Ubisoft Account (Supports Linking to Steam Account)
Update:
And just to mention the obvious.. but it's not the most promising start for Oddballers on Steam. Kind of sad to see a game release on a platform that Ubisoft is actively working against with their requirements and problematic anticheat solutions.
Also the wishlist for the game was very low, signifying how much Ubisoft cares.
But at least it serves as a note of caution for other developers to think about before signing with Ubisoft.
Sadly Gameswing got caught up in the Ubisoft machine.. I'm sure they had their reasons at the time!
Also I would probably recommend buying Stikbold instead! Awesome local multiplayer game by the same team.
As I would not expect the online multiplayer community in Oddballers to be actually saturated with players at all. So it makes little difference anyways sadly.. Stikbold also felt like a fundamentally better and more pure design than Oddballers anyways, from my (short) experience with the previously released Oddballers demo.
Adding: I know I do sound a bit harsh here. And yes! I used to work for Ubisoft (Massive).. some 11-16 years ago. Back when it was a bit more respectable company. The past few years seems to have been somewhat of a downward spiral. And no hard feeling here. I had a great time there. But you could certainly feel there was this push for DRM solutions with the server side anti piracy system 'Orbit' that was developed at Massive. That they then had to pull due to backlash from the community. And what then UPlay, now (Ubi Connect) that was also being built at the time there.
I guess I surely understand the intention from a higher management point of view. Wanting to avoid piracy and a 30% Steam cut while luring players into their own shop ecosystem. But at the end of the day some of these ideas has left the company in a somewhat bad light (besides a lot of other issues) and unable to change their ways. Only trying to force these ideas upon people who doesn't want these things. Leading to a tainted company image among PC players especially.
With the current upper management mentality I'm not sure they will be able to recover much street cred in the foreseeable future. Oh well!

Finally after 10 years in the making Minecraft is about to make it to the big screen.
Buuuut.. yeah.. it looks like something that should just go straight to the bin. Not uncommon for video games to movie adaptations.
Didn't bother watching the recent Borderlands movie. The trailer was plenty for me. And the general consensus seems to confirm that it was rather horrible.
I'm sure the new Minecraft movie will sell tickets though!
