News! Tech! Tools! Talks! Games! And Stuff Worth Sharing!
Re: News! Tech! Tools! Talks! Games! And Stuff Worth Sharing!
Todays sad view from the office.
The smoke from the Børsen fire. An absolutely iconic and beautiful 400 year old building I have been visiting a few times over the years. Adding: The first time back in circa 1990 for Amiga Expo!
This also means that Copenhagen MatchUp 2024 set in April 29-30th will have to find a new venue really soon (yes they are indeed working hard to find one in time). I am sure we will hear more soon. https://copenhagenmatchup.dk
Good update! A new venue has been found! (You know if you go the mail as signed up)

DK (related) surprise release! Dungeons_of_Alethrion
Published by Skjald Aps. Formed by the former co-founder of the animation studio Sun-Creature Studio where the animated series 'Tales of Alethrion originated. (Edit: Technically the project originated at the Animation Workshop in Viborg naturally)
Not sure how much the actual development went on in Denmark. Seems to be the main work of US based (solodev?) Nick Marinello. Cute the IP lives on in pixelart game form.
Lots of clips and episodes here from the series
https://www.youtube.com/@TalesofAlethrion/videos
On a more serious note
Also this release is sadly a case study of how to NOT do a Steam release. Virtually having no wishlist or PR before a release will make it very hard for the game to gain visibility on Steam. Let's hope the fans of the series can draw a bit more traffic over time and the quality is there.
Grats to Skjald on the release regardless!

Great development video of Fable. Certainly not with out challenges.
Re: News! Tech! Tools! Talks! Games! And Stuff Worth Sharing!
DK (mainly, Those Eyes) and Canadian (Tobo) project Mouse & Crane will be releasing for Nintendo Switch and mobile later this year. A kids game with co-op elements.
Btw. Trine Laier released a book some years ago with the characters Mus & Kran. Which now got their own game.
Assuming the Canadian link is probaly related to grant money for co-productions.

Nice to see some of the previously mentioned gaussian splatting techniques running at very interactive frame rates in a browser.
So far it's just static 3D scenes, not optimal for most games just yet. Still impressive tech that is far better at capturing more 'fuzzy details' aswell as shading information compared to regular photogrammetry. Also being close the objects will fade out anything that is near the camera.
A 'next-gen Google Maps' and other visualizations could certainly see a huge benefit from the tech. Pretty sure that is something we will see in the near future.
Have a look-see at various gaussian splatting rendered captures here:
https://lumalabs.ai/dashboard/captures
There are also 3D capture software available for mobile.
https://lumalabs.ai/app
Lumalabs even does AI generation of 3D models.. though a more useful polygonal output. I guess the 3D generation quality is not quite on the 'really useful' side just yet. Though it does a actually pretty descent retopology on export. Overall I think 3D artist still have a few months to sleep tight.

After a longer break of about 3 years, Danish youtube gamedev tutorial star Brackeys (Asbjørn Thirslund) is back to his 1.7 million subscribers. Known for a long series of Unity tutorials.
However now.. the focus is Godot.
I guess he mostly sticks to himself and his youtube audience, as I have never even spotted the guy at Danish gamedev events.
But welcome back Brackeys!
Jokingly he promises the first Godot tutorial in Danish. But I'm sure it was just that.
Adding: by the way.. there isn't a whole lot of talk about his games, which honestly is pretty basic with some interesting mechanics here and there. His forte is certainly beginner friendly tutorials. I'm sure he will see continued success in the tutorial space.
But fun to take a look at here, Brackeys games on itch:

So more big restructuring news from Embracer
EMBRACER GROUP ANNOUNCES ITS INTENTION TO TRANSFORM INTO THREE STANDALONE PUBLICLY LISTED ENTITIES AT NASDAQ STOCKHOLM
INSIDE INFORMATION: The Board of Directors of Embracer Group AB (“Embracer Group”) today announces a transformative step for value creation through a separation of the group into three market-leading games and entertainment companies: Asmodee Group, “Coffee Stain & Friends”[1] and “Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends”[1]. The three entities will be separate, publicly listed companies, enabling each entity to better focus on their respective core strategies and offer more differentiated and distinct equity stories for existing and new shareholders. This will enable the entities to unlock value in the high-quality assets of Embracer Group following the successful completion of the restructuring program.

And today is release day for Phantom Fury developed by Slipgate Ironworks and published by 3D Realms. The game will be releasing in a few hours.
The original Ion Fury was developed by Voidpoint, LLC. to great reception and sales. Interesting to see if Slipgate can do the same, an observation is that the recent releases hasn't been so well received, so crossing fingers Phantom Fury will kick ass!
Update: Oh bugger... early Steam user reviews are not the best sign. So far on mixed reviews 62.50% out of 48 reviews (SteamDB) We all know that the FPS crowd is extremely hard to please. But yeah... it looks like a self inflicted wound that should have landed better. And I hope the devs will get to time to fix things over time. But it looks like another rushed Slipgate release and the company has been focusing on too many games in too little time. That's a concern I have had for a long time, ever since hearing more about how many projects Slipgate was actually working on. Hopefully Voidpoint will be able to lift Ion Fury related or other projects in the future, as this should serve as a stark reminder of how to not handle things.
Adding: Also as we are past the Embracer situation in Slipgates case. It is unknown how much influence this have had on this rushed release. Sadly regadless of circumstances it will still paint the studio in a bad light for their current and future customers. Very unfortunate! I really think its super cool to have a studio with this focus on retro shooters on the local scene and I hope they will be able to learn and change course moving forward.
Also review video here pointing out a lot of clearly visible issues.
